I can remember having to face a panel job interview. I was so nervous until the interview. It turned out to be a great experience. However, I did one thing that helped me tremendously. I spend some time thinking about the questions they would ask and prepared good answers from my expertise and experience. I had only one such interview and you know what? I got the job! So here's how I won over my panel of interviewers.
The
reason for a panel interview is to get the opinion of multiple people
at the
same time on the viability of a work candidate.
Typically the people that attend are from various
departments within the
company, a representative from human resources, the department that
is
hiring, and perhaps others. This
saves time and
money for the company and lets them see how the candidates react under
pressure.
When I was in my interview, I maintained a good eye contact with each person as they were speaking to me. When I answered a question, I didn't look around the room or look up to the ceiling. I continued with a good eye contact while I answered their questions, but I made sure to address my answer to the whole panel, not just the person who asked the question.
I still remember the smiles on their faces as I answered their questions. I felt as if I had become somewhat of a friend to each of them. However, I still kept my place during the interview.
Be
prepared for follow-up questions from any or all of the attendees. Each one is going to want
to know information
from an angle that will directly affect their department. So
you can consider this a few days before the interview if you have a
chance.
Look at
the positive side to a panel job interview; you were
considered a strong
enough
candidate to gather more than one person to evaluate your interview and
possibly choose
you to work for their company. An
interview is an investment for a company, an expenditure of money in
the form
of salaries; you are there because you have a chance at the position so
take
advantage of the opportunity.
