University Accreditation

University accreditation is an important factor when choosing your college or university and when applying for a job.

College or university accreditation is a process which makes sure that a school admits students, spends money, pursues educational goals and brings in faculty that meet basic quality standards. 

Although the U.S. Department of Education has repeatedly indicated that it would like to institute some kind of national accreditation process, the government is not in charge of college and university accreditation right now. 

What this means to you is that you cannot believe such an institution that claims to be accredited based upon their word or advertising they might show you.  You're going to have to check on that information yourself. 

Many times a college will tell prospective students that they are accredited or will be receiving accreditation shortly, but they might not get it.  This happened to a relative of mine, even after I repeatedly warned them to to do an accreditation check on their own.  After a year, they were told that the collage didn't get the accreditation, causing them to take many of the expensive courses over again at another collage. 

So what can you do to avoid this problem?  

Do Your Own University Accreditation Check

Use the Department of Education's search tool to check on the accreditation most colleges, universities and trade schools.  Go here to make your check.  

Also CHEA, The Council for Higher Education Accreditation, also has a comprehensive database of accredited schools.
