Work From Home Mom or Dad

Becoming a work from home mom or dad is an exciting ambition that is attainable.  All you need is a little patience, initiative or experience and the desire to bring up your children yourself instead of taking them to daycare.

It's true! You can raise your children while you earn an income from your home.

How do I know? Because I did it! I started my writing business with practically no money from a hobby that I loved and built it into a part-time $24,0000 a year business. However, that was years ago. I realize that amount today doesn't stretch too far. But that was my starting point.

However, money wasn't always an issue for me.  It was learning how to maintain a certain attitude that kept me from feeling badly about my success rather than excited and thankful.

Work From Home Mom And Dad Attitude

The potential for earning an income from the Internet is being realized today by hundreds of thousands of men and women including myself.

In the past, I had to purchase ad space for hundreds of dollars every month, print and store the books I created, mail them out almost daily and continue a direct mail ad campaign monthly.

My net income could have been much higher had I been able to use the power of Internet marketing the way I do now. Overhead is so much smaller with websites for showcasing products and services and the cost of postage almost nothing with digital products.

However, that was then and this is now. What hasn't changed much is the prevailing attitude among some people that it's not fulfilling to stay home and bring up children.

When I first became a work from home mom I received the following comment in one form or another: "Why are you settling for staying at home with your children when you should working a real job?"  I would listen and smile, but continued to be thankful that I could live my dream.   As far as I was concerned, I had the best of both worlds because I had the excitement of a home business and I was able to be with my children and raise them myself.

Relatives would tell me, "as soon as my children could go to school, I got out of the house! How can you stand it?"  Or "how's your little business doing?" with a little laugh that implied I was a fool.

So it's important that you really want to stay at home with your children and not care what others think.  You can never be ashamed of working at home to be with your children.  I believe that being a work at home mom or dad is a priviledge.

Speak Not About Income!

When money begins to flow through your home business, it's exciting! Not so much for the money, but because you were able to create something from nothing, nurture it and make it produce an income. People are happy to pay you for your services and products!  That is the greatest reward of the work from home mom or dad.

When your business is at this point, it's tempting to share your gross or net income, but I believe that it is better to keep that information to yourself.  Some people might feel you are bragging and get upset, while others might feel jealous, usually the ones who might make fun of you, especially if it took you awhile to generate an income.

I have always kept the rule to never tell people how much money I make, especially if it appeared that I made more money than someone else.  Such information is best kept private.  What I did instead was talk about how I didn't have to purchase work clothes, fight traffic for a couple of hours per day, or pay the higher cost of having to keep my children in day-care for over eight hours. They went to pre-school, but only for a limited time.

I always saw myself as a successful work from home mom, but I didn't make an issue about it to people who didn't seem too happy for me. I didn't feel that I needed to validate my success to anyone.  It was enough that I could earn a living without having to live a hectic life, running around trying to work and still fit in with my childrens and husband's schedules.

I won't deny that it took some time to coordinate my business with raising children, but it was worth the effort! I wanted to raise my children on my own and give them the Christian values I believed were important. So I happily lived with the stigma of "wasting my time by staying at home with my children."

This doesn't mean that I'm criticizing those who leave home for work, I'm just saying that this was my choice and I was able to live it! I gave respect to those who preferred different choices. It's important that work from home mom and dads keep an open mind to those working outside the home while raising a family so that they remain kind and respectful rather than becoming like those who work outside the home and have little respect for work from home mom and dads.  It's important to remain happy, thankful and at peace.  After all, we want to be the best example for our children.
